Who we are

Orthogonal Productions is a Minneapolis-based theater company dedicated to creating work that is bold, queer-centered, emotionally honest, and meticulously ensemble-crafted. We believe theater should be a place where people breathe easier, take risks, rediscover their passion for theater, and see themselves represented with depth and dignity.

Founded by co-producers Brandon Caviness, Justin Dile Nelson, and Adam Boutz, Orthogonal began as a response to the lack of queer representation in the stories being told on local stages — and the lack of safety and care queer performers experienced in many rehearsal rooms. Brandon’s vision was to build a company where queer people could fully inhabit characters without being reduced to stereotypes or tokenism, and where performers at all stages of their artistic journey could grow, heal, and shine. Our performances also showcase the outstanding talents of choreographer Jenny Eisenbraun.

Our productions are known for their detail-rich worlds, historical grounding, and powerful ensembles. In Brandon’s own words, “Getting a good ensemble is what makes a show worth watching.” Every performer in our shows builds a three-dimensional character with their own relationships, desires, and history. Nothing is ornamental. Nothing is background. Everyone onstage matters.

We make theater for people who seek authenticity, complexity, and stories that give you something to talk about as you make your way home.
